Kaunas Lituanica Wins 2010 Lithuanian Baseball Superfinal 2010 09 25
The 2010 Lithuanian Baseball League Championship was won by Kaunas Lituanica in dramatic fashion, defeating Juodasis Vikingas 10:3, and winning the best-of-five series 3-0. In this third and final victory, Vikingas and Kaunas both started off quick with runs in the first two innings, with the score 2:2 at the end of the 2nd. Kaunas was able to hold Vikingas at 3 runs the rest of the way behind steady defense and strong pitching by Marijus Dargis (7 2/3 IP, 6 K, 1 ER) and steady offense led by Dargis (2-3, RBI, 2R) and Sergej Benkec (2-5, HR, 2R, 2RBI).
This marks the 11th Championship for Kaunas Lituanica, making them the winningest Club in Lithuanian Baseballs short history, surpassing Juodasis Vikingas who have 10 Lithuanian Titles. Vikingas and Lituanica have met in the finals for the past two seasons.
The 2010 season will conclude this weekend with the Interleague Semifinals on Saturday, and the final game on Sunday. Of the four teams qualifying are two teams from Lithuania and two from Belarus.
Lithuanian Finals recap: games 1 and 2
Game 1, Vilnius: Kaunas wins in 7 inning 12:2. Both teams scored in their first time at bat, with the score tied 1:1 after the 1st. Kaunas added a run in the 2nd, then 9 runs in the 6th. W. Gordon pitched a complete game (7 IP, 2ER, 5H). Kaunas had four players with 2 or more hits on the game. Vikingas offense was led by Tomas Jankoitis (2-3, R, 2SB).
Game 2, Kaunas: Marijus Dargis threw a shutout, winning the match 8:0.
