Kaunas Lituanica wins Interleague Championship for the 7th Time 2010 10 04
October 3rd, Vilnius: the Interleague Semifinals and Finals took place this weekend, marking the end to the 2010 baseball season in Lithuania. 2010 Lithuanian Champions Kaunas Lituanica were again champions on Sunday, winning the Interleague tournament for the second season in a row.
The Interleague Championship, which includes teams from Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus, was widdled down to just four remaining teams for finals weekend. The first semifinals matchup was between Kaunas Lituanica and Sporto Vilkai of Vilnius. Audrius Beliauskas pitched a gem on the mound for Kaunas Lituanica, with Virmidas Neverauskas taking the loss for Sporto Vilkai, Kaunas winning by a score of 13:3.
In the second semifinal game featuring two teams both from Belarus, Brest Zubrs defeated Skidel Sugar Storm by a score of 4:3, in a game that went 11 innings.
In the match for the Interleague Bronze medal, Vilnius Sporto Vilkai defeated Skideli Sugar Storm 10:8. Virmidas Neverauskas was again on the mound for Sporto Vilkai, with son Dovydas Neverauskas pitching the 9th inning and striking out all three batters.
In the Championship game, Kaunas faced Belarus rival Brest Zubrs. Lituanica faced Zubrs four times this year; the first two matches during the Interleague regular season Kaunas won both times, first in Vilnius by a score of 8:6, then in Kaunas 12:2. The third contest between the two teams was in the European Cup B Pool Championship, a disappointing defeat 8:1. Their final meeting in Interleague regular season play they lost to Brest by the same score, 8:1.
In this final match, Brest took an early 1st inning lead 1:0. Kaunas would take the lead 2:1 in the 4th inning and never relinquish. After a shaky start, Kaunas starting pitcher Will Gordon settled in to pitch 7 1/3 strong innings before being relieved by Marijus Dargis.
Lithuanica wins the Interleague Championship for the 7th time, and Brest Zubrs wins the Silver medal for the first time, its previous best finish being Bronze in 2008 and 2009.
Two Kaunas players were awarded individual prizes, with tournament MVP honors going to Will Gordon and Best Hitter going to Marijus Dargis. (above photos). Best Pitcher went to Zubrs pitcher Andrei Los.

BK Vilnius pitcher Marius Balandis made it to the Major League Baseball European Academy which is going to take place July 31st - August 16th in Regensburg, Germany.
Other BK "Vilnius" pitcher Robertas Vilimas who participated in last year's academy is on the reserves list.
Last Sunday Linas Kleiza's Charity and Support Fund were celebrating International child protection day and its birthday. On that occasion together with Kaunas Lituanica baseball team gave baseball lessons to the kids from Kaunas municipality's child care homes.

A week ago, in Bled, Slovenia, the European Baseball Confederation congress took place and Valentinas Bubulis from Utena was elected to the Executive Committee. Into the "European Baseball Government" Lithuanian was elected for the first time in the Lithuanian sports history.
